THOUSANDS CONQUER THE EPIC CLIMB OF THE BENNAU BRYCHEINIOG
More than 4,800 cyclists descended on the Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) on Sunday 14 June 2026 to take on the iconic Dragon Ride, embracing a unique challenge as the event’s legendary routes were ridden in reverse for the first time in many years.
Widely regarded as one of the UK’s toughest and most scenic sportives, Dragon Ride once again delivered a day of epic riding, unforgettable achievements and incredible community spirit. From determined first-time participants to experienced Dragon Slayers, riders were pushed to their limits as familiar roads revealed a completely different side of the Dragon.
One of the day’s fiercest battles unfolded on the Devil’s Elbow timed section, where cyclists competed for the prestigious King and Queen of the Mountain titles. Awarded to the fastest male and female riders on the climb, the competition takes place on a brutal 1.8km ascent with an average gradient of 10.3%.
This year’s winners were:
- King of the Mountain: Adam Townsend – 00:05:17
• Queen of the Mountain: Elizabeth Cave – 00:07:21
Andrew Smith, CEO of organisers A.S.O. UK, said:
“Every year Dragon Ride delivers incredible stories of determination, resilience and achievement, and 2026 was no exception. Reversing the routes gave even our most experienced riders a completely new challenge, and it was fantastic to see thousands of cyclists embracing it with such enthusiasm. The atmosphere throughout the day was incredible, and every rider who crossed the finish line should be immensely proud of their achievement.”
Dragon Ride will return on Sunday 13 June 2027, giving cyclists another opportunity to test themselves on the legendary roads of South Wales and write their own chapter in Dragon Ride history.
The 2027 edition will hold even greater significance, with Wales preparing to host the Grand Départ of the Tour de France. Dragon Ride participants will have the chance to ride some of the same iconic roads and climbs that will feature in the world’s biggest cycling race, including the famous Rhigos climb, which is set to form part of Stage 3 from Welshpool to Cardiff.
The 2027 event will once again offer four spectacular route options:
• Dragon Devil: 298km with 4,504m of climbing
• Gran Fondo: 222km with 3,583m of climbing
• Medio Fondo: 153km with 2,332m of climbing
• Cymru Classic: 99km with 1,350m of climbing
